Call for Papers
The Far Western Philosophy of Education Society invites you to join us for our 56th annual conference, January 16-17, 2009, at Honolulu, Hawai'i
We are pleased to announce Kieran Egan, Ph.D., as our keynote speaker.
Theme: The focus of this year's conference is exploring the ideologies of educational theory and practice in the post-millennial and trans-cultural age. In particular, how does (or can) education contribute to the development of wise citizens who demonstrate independent and critical thinking and problem-solving, recognize their social responsibility to the broader demands of citizenship, and enter into a community of common concern and constructive social responsibility? This conference is an opportunity to open a dialogue between students, teachers, academicians, and theorists. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Law, Moral Theory, Public Policy, Global Studies, and Educational Theory and Foundations.
Secondary theme: Integrating Ethics into the High School Curriculum. The focus of the Saturday mini-conference is to examine issues involved in bringing ethics into the elementary and secondary classroom, in particular examining educational structures, topics, authors, and methods that encourage ethical understanding in pre-college students.
250 word Abstracts or Papers: Due date October 18, 2008
We seek papers, panel discussions, visual presentations, poster presentations, and other effective media to convey interactive discussions of timely and relevant issues in the Philosophy of Education. Presentations should identify critical issues, raise significant questions, and address pressing concerns facing contemporary educators and thinkers.
All material should be accessible to educators, academics, and students, as well as members of the general academic community.
