Dear Educator:

The Far West Philosophy of Education Society is hosting a workshop for K-12 educators in conjunction with its annual conference as part of the Utah Democracy Project. The conference topic is: Teaching for Democracy. The workshop will be held on Saturday, January 16 from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the Timpanogos Room on the third floor of the new UVU library.

We invite Utah educators to participate in the workshop, conducted by Jen Glaser, Ph.D. Senior Faculty, Mandel Leadership Institute, Israel Center for Philosophy in Education, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and devoted to helping students of all ages to develop critical thinking skills and deliberative democracy in the classroom with a method called the "Community of Inquiry" method.

Dr. Glaser, Mandel Leadership Institute, Israel Israel Center for Philosophy in Education and adjunct faculty at Hebrew University in Jerusalem holds a faculty position at the Melton Centre for Jewish Education. She specializes in children's thinking and helping them to enhance powerful techniques to elevate classroom discourse.

Utah educators who would like to participate in this event will receive a $50 honorarium and Continuing Education Units. If you would like to receive CEU credit for attendance at the workshop, please contact me directly. Seating is limited for this workshop, so if you are interested in participating, please RSVP to: fwpes@uvu.edu before December 28, 2009.

Please note that we are announcing an essay contest for high school students. The title of the competition is: "How Education Contributes to Democratic Citizenship." Students will compete for one of three prizes, with a first place prize of $125.

Please check our conference information link for additional information. The conference begins on Thursday morning with an address by the Brown sisters of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that did away with segregation laws in public education. Our keynote speaker, John Gatto (New York State Teacher of the Year) will speak on Democracy and Education at 4 p.m. Both events are open to the public and you are most welcome to bring your students to both.

You are also cordially invited to attend other conference events. Conference registration can be accessed through registration link. You do not have to register on the conference site in order to participate in the Saturday morning workshop.

Very truly yours,
